The state of North Carolina has tons of great attractions, from gorgeous beaches to shopping centers, and everything in between. Read on to learn more about some of the best places to visit on your North Carolina road trip!

Emerald Isle

If you're looking for a classic summer getaway, set your sights on the Crystal Coast of North Carolina! One of the most beloved beaches on the coastline is Emerald Isle, which stretches for an incredible 13 miles. This beach is a great choice for anyone looking for a quiet, clean, and relaxing visit, and since it has so much space, you'll always find a spot to lay your blanket. Plus, for those who are in the midst of a road trip, you're sure to appreciate all the helpful extras that Emerald Isle has to offer. For example, there's ample parking, built-in grills for a beachside barbecue, and even on-site showers. This stop has everything you need for the perfect beach day, whether you're staying for an afternoon, or all weekend long.

Airlie Gardens

If you're looking for a relaxing and invigorating getaway, be sure to make the Airlie Gardens a stop on your next road trip through the North Carolina coast! This botanical garden is located in Wilmington, North Carolina. The gardens hold the namesake of the Airlie Oak, an oak tree that was first planted in 1545! Today, the Airlie Gardens encompasses an impressive 67 acres of land, 10 of which are stunning lakes, and many different exhibitions that visitors can enjoy throughout the year. For example, you can witness events like butterfly releases, meet and greets with native North Carolina species, and even live music concerts against the beautiful backdrop of the gardens themselves. You and your loved ones can take a self-guided tour as you meander along the network of trails. In addition to all of the well-maintained paths throughout the gardens, you can also take a tram tour to see the entire property in an afternoon!

North Carolina Aquarium

If you're looking for a way to add excitement and wonder to your road trip, be sure to check out the North Carolina Aquarium of Roanoke Island. Roanoke is a true island, separated from the coastline by the Croatan Sound. However, you can still reach Roanoke Island by car, thanks to the William B. Umstead Memorial Bridge. The North Carolina Aquarium is a great destination for the whole family, especially if you're traveling with younger family members. There are all sorts of amazing interactive exhibits to enjoy, and you can even get up-close and personal with some of the aquatic animals. You can have the opportunity to pet a stingray, and observe river otters, alligators, sharks, and much more. The aquarium is also home to the Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation (STAR) Center, which focuses on turtle rescue.

Wright Brothers Memorial

On December 17th, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright successfully achieved the first ever airplane flights right here in North Carolina! Their memorial still stands today in North Carolina's Kill Devil Hills Memorial Park. At this historic site in North Carolina's Outer Banks, you can see the exact takeoff and landing points where that famous flight took place. You can also go on a guided tour with a knowledgeable park ranger, in order to learn more about the Wright Brothers' incredible journey towards flight. You can also step inside re-created living quarters that illustrate how the brothers camped out on-site as they worked on their planes!
